Wrong DOS version: how to fix

Brain is the industry name for Perfect Computer Virus, first released on January 19, 1986[1] and most likely the first computer virus for IBM personal computers. . (IBM PC) and/or compatible devices.

Brain infects IBM computers and also replaces the boot sector of every floppy disk with a copy that indicates a virus. The root of the real sector is moved to another sector to mark it as bad. Infected hard drives typically contain five kilobytes of bad parts. The disk label is usually transferred to ©Brain, and the following inscriptions can be seen in the infected discarded sectors:

Welcome to the dungeon (c) 1986 Amjads (pvt) Ltd VIRUS_SHOE RECORD V9.0 Dedicated to dynamic memories, including millions of viruses that are absolutely not with us today - Thank you, GOOD! ! ! BEWARE OF ER..VIRUS: This special program catches the program as soon as these messages .... $#@%$@ !!

There are minor but also significant deviations from this version in the text. The virus slows down our own drive and makes seven kilos inaccessible.bytes of memory – DOS. Was written by Amjad Farooq Alvi and Basit Farooq Alvi who were living with Cha Miran near Lahore Railway Station in Lahore Pakistan at the time. The brothers told Time magazine that they wrote the game to protect their medical software from being illegally copied, and that it was only allowed for copyright infringement purposes. , defense and a link to the great early programming forum on the Dungeon BBS, appeared a year later because my brothers cleaned up the beta code, they can’t be contacted for the final version of this version regarding the program.

Brain does not have the code to partition a disk, and it prevents disk infection by checking the most significant bit of the BIOS disk number you are accessing. and usually do not infect the hard drive when the bit is set, unlike other infections of the time, which did not pay attention to the layout of the hard drive and therefore destroyed the data stored on hard drives, treating them in the same way asfloppy disks. The brain usually went unnoticed, partly due to deliberate non-destruction, especially when the user paid little attention to the low speed of accessing files on the disk.

The virus was accompanied by the brothers’ address and three phone numbers, as well as a message telling the user that their computer was infected and to call them for help with vaccinations:

Welcome to the dungeon © 1986 Basit & Amjads (pvt). BRAIN COMPUTER 730 serves NIZAM
ALLAMA BLOCK IQBAL TOWN LAHORE-PAKISTAN PHONE: 430791,443248,280530. Beware of this VIRUS… Contact us for vaccination…

This program was originally supposed to be used to monitor the central monitoring program for IBM computers and people who distribute pirated copies of hard drives. This tracking service was supposed to stop and spoof illegal floppy copies, otherwise the program would sometimes use up your last five kilobytes on the Apple floppy, making it impossible for other programs to store additional floppy disks.

Their telephone lines were overloaded. The brothers, along with another brother, Farooq Shaheed Alwi, replicated their business in Pakistan as Brain NET ISP with a small company, Brain Tcommunication Limited.

In 2011, 35 years after the release of Brain, F-Secure’s Mikko Hippönen traveled to Pakistan to interview Amjad for a unique documentary.[3][4 ] Inspired by this documentary and its wide circulation, a group of Pakistani bloggers interviewed Amjad under a special Bloggerine banner.[5]

If you play with DOS long enough, you will eventually try to run the program and also get a message abouterror, usually indicating that the DOS version is incorrect. This means that you are hoping to run a program designed for a different version of DOS than the one you are using.

The best way to run programs under the version of DOS they were designed for. But if your company can’t, if you’re using DOS 5.0 or later, you can use the real SETVER to control all programs and bypass error evaluation. The program will work, but there is a risk that it is not fully compatible. Programs

Why Report A Bad DOS Version

As DOS has grown and evolved, it has added features that were not available in earlier versions. Some programs check what version of DOS you have to make sure you’re already using something fairly new. If you were running DOS 2.0 and found yourself running a program designed to take advantage of DOS 3.3, each program would return an error message.

The problem was that some programs would display an error message if your DOS was newer than expected and not just old e. In theory, DOS 4.0 and later should be backward compatible with DOS 3.3. And when I trained, it was a lot. But not all publishers were willing to take that risk.

In DOS 5.0, Microsoft included a SETVER utility to make DOS 5.0 on an older platform so that it would definitely work on a newer version. Almost always it was effective. Therefore, Microsoft continues to ship SETVER with DOS 6 and with our versions of DOS included with Windows 95, 98, 98SE and ME.

Why Do Generic DOS Commands Report Full DOS

But sometimes you get a “wrong version” DOS error when you run a standard DOS utility. Why would anyone check most Microsoft DOS commands to make sure they are correct for the version of DOS they were originally run with? Some, like the EMM386 memory manager and the SMARTDRV disk cache, don’t, but disk utilities like CHKDSK and the COMMAND.COM command interpreter will. If Microsoft distributed changes to DOS in this way, the codes would have no problem. This ensured that nothing unhealthy would happen if you created a DOS boot disk with an older version of DOS and then popped in.Trying to run the requirement from your hard drive, which contained some newer version of DOS.
